RFP Magazine, Designing Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Public Space Initiative are jointly oganising the Outstanding Public Spaces Awards 2013 to celebrate the best (and worst) of Hong Kong . Nominations opened to the public July 2013.
The Public Space awards were created in response to calls from the public and urbanists for greater attention to be paid to public space in Hong Kong. By allowing people to both nominate and vote for the spaces they like the best will send a messages from the owners, designers and managers of the parks, piazzas, city streets and walkways around the SAR what the public appreciate and what features set the benchmark for future planning.
The contest is free to enter and the organisers are expecting entries from both the general public and also from private building owners, management companies and designers who are responsible for public or privately owned public space. The entries are grouped into different categories representing the different types of public spaces that we occupy and who is responsible for them:
There is in addition a fifth category for an Outstandingly BAD Public Space – again anyone can nominate, these categories are for people who feel that a particular area fails to deliver public or environmental benefits – sending a clear message to the owner that they have some work to do!
The Awards will be open to voting by the public however the organisers have also arranged a jury of qualified designers, developers and other experts who will take into account the public opinion.
And Voting…?
There are no strict criteria regarding the voting however a team of expert judges will be looking for excellence in one or more of the following areas: public appreciation, appearance, design functionality, maintenance management, programme/use management, accessibility, sustainability and contribution to society. Voting also will be opened to the public after the nomination period closes.
